About Horseneck Beach State Reservation

Located on the southern coast of Massachusetts in the town of Westport, Horseneck Beach State Reservation spans nearly 1,100 acres along the Atlantic Ocean. The reservation features over 2.5 miles of sandy beachfront ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing. Inland areas comprise salt marshes, kettle ponds, and tidal flats, providing critical habitat for migratory birds and diverse coastal wildlife. The beach was originally part of a large barrier beach system shaped by glacial and oceanic processes. It became a designated state reservation in 1956 to protect the natural environment and provide public access to the shoreline. Horseneck Beach includes two freshwater ponds, Gooseberry Neck, and two campgrounds, making it a favored destination for camping, fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching. Hiking trails weave through the reservation’s coastal forests and salt marsh edges, offering scenic views and wildlife spotting opportunities. The area is recognized for its strong winds and waves, attractive for windsurfing and kiteboarding. Numerous observation platforms and interpretive signs help visitors understand the area's rich ecology and history. Seasonal events highlight local wildlife, particularly migratory shorebirds and seals that frequent the bay. Horseneck is also a significant stopover on the Atlantic Flyway migration route. Its proximity to the towns of Westport, Little Compton (RI), and New Bedford makes it easily accessible for day users and overnight stays. With ample facilities including picnic areas, restrooms, and well-maintained parking, Horseneck Beach State Reservation continues to be a cherished coastal park for residents and visitors seeking a blend of beach recreation and nature exploration.
